My "other" garden

Neal and I both spent last weekend in DC, but that's not my story. A little less than a week before I left, I had "gutted" a cantaloupe, putting all the seeds and pulpy stuff down the disposal. I left the kitchen clean Friday morning with nothing in the sink (we mostly use the dishwasher anyway). Today (Monday-4 days since anyone had used the sink), while I was preparing dinner I looked in my sink, and to my surprise, a plant was growing through the drain. It was about two inches tall and had roots about an inch long. For about three hours I couldn't figure out what it could be. My best guess was that I must have weeded my garden and washed a weed into the sink when I washed my hands. But something with that story just didn't seem right. After thinking through my possibilities I have finally been able to identify the little seed in the roots--I was growing a cantaloupe in my disposal! I don't know how long it must have been there, and even though this little plant must be a fighter, it just cannot stay!
